What is in my voice?
The spectral analysis of announcers’ speech, performed by scientists, demonstrated, that the most known of them have the whole frequency range from 80 up to 2800 Hz, while the average person during conversation uses the range on average 80 - 500 (maximum 1700) Hz. The zone of the so-called high formant (from 2000 up to 2800 Hz) is seldom used, namely it reflects such characteristics of speech as confidence, expressiveness and persuasiveness. The more of these qualities are in the person’s speech , the higher waves by amplitude are present at this spectral region, the higher the mean value of high formant is. These data couldn’t but interest us, in fact it was a question of fine and informative technique, applied for identification of voice of telephone blackmailers, hooligans, terrorists and even prominent politicians. And if the picture of the voice, "decomposed" to frequencies, gives so much information on its owner, we couldn’t but assume, that the spectrum of the voice of a stuttering person will also have some characteristics. Indeed, the analysis of the stuttering people voices demonstrated a displacement of the speech spectrum (in comparison with not stuttering people) into the low-frequency field - in the field of 0-10 Hz there are overtones, "responsible" for occurrence of spasms and stumblings. It turns out, that stuttering provokes and strengthens stuttering. Therefore some experts also speak, that stuttering "can’t be treated". However if the person is learnt to speak without these low-frequency overtones, the inclination to spasms will disappear! You can obtain it, having reconstructed the speech spectrum through all the scale of frequencies, mainly displacing it into the field of high formant. It is noted, that stuttering stops and becomes impossible at the value of high formant of the voice more than 30 %. Is it much or little? Judge: In speech of a stammering person this parameter is equal on average to 2-7 %, of not stammering people - it makes approximately 12-15 %, of professional announcers with well "trained" voices keep a high formant in the range of 30-50 %. The well-known announcer of the Soviet Union Jury Levitan had 60 % of his voice spectrum in the field of high formant, and the well-known Volga bass Feodor Shalyapin - 80 %! Here are the opportunities, which are hidden in our speech organs! Hence, 30 %-boundary is a quite feasible task, though it exceeds in 2-2,5 times a parameter of the average person. It turns out, that a stammering patient for the rescue of his illness should improve the speech data in 6-10 times!!! There is a natural question - how easy You can achieve it? It has appeared, that for achievement of the necessary level of high formant it is only necessary to know three small secrets, which will be defined in the following section. |
